The Wood Beyond the World is a fantasy novel by William Morris, perhaps the first modern fantasy writer to unite an imaginary world with the element of the supernatural, and thus the precursor of much of present-day fantasy literature. It was first published in hardcover by Morris's Kelmscott Press, in 1894. The book's importance in the history of fantasy literature was recognized by its republication by Ballantine Books as the third volume of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in July, 1969. A graduate of Leeds College of Music Conservatoire with first class honors in composition for screen, William studied under BAFTA nominated composer Neil Myers. William is internationally published with Quantum Music Works and The Eggplant Stereo. He is currently based in Manchester, England. View wiki. Morris, William, 1834-1896. Publication date. Morris wrote in a style that would verily drive some readers to the brink, but I don't mind the thees, thous, forsooths, hithers and such. This type of language can be very entertaining. The earliest of Morris' fantasy stories, The Wood Beyond the World is short and simply told, in the style derived from medieval romance that is his trademark. The story is one which emphasises the psychological world at the expense of the plot, and has the curious feature of an ending which seems to forget about the beginning. William Morris - social reformer, poet, artist, craftsman, book designer, publisher. and novelist among other things. Creator of the first 'epic fantasy' novels, which influenced many authors including Tolkien, C S Lewis, and Swinburne. Died far too soon, but left behind some excellent work - including this, his first and shortest true fantasy novel, The Wood Beyond the World. Told in a retro- mediaeval prose which becomes easy to read when you learn a few words it's adult, stylish, and hugely enjoyable. Often imitated but IMHO never bettered. When William Morris founded the Kelmscott Press in 1890, he combined his medieval craft ideals with his skills as one of Britain's most sophisticated, progressive designers. He achieved his goal - the creation of books as beautiful as those of the Middle Ages - by abandoning many of the commercial practices of his day. Morris designed types of great elegance and reintroduced color into the body of the page, adding life to the printed word. More than an exquisitely produced book, The Wood Beyond the World ranks among the finest of Morris's prose-romances, a wonderful fantasy in a medieval setting, brimming with high adventure and flights of fancy.
