Welcome to the Dance Years, the first in a series of CDs that will give a snapshot of some of the biggest dance tunes in the UK over the last twenty years. Each CD celebrates a different year and reflects what I was doing in my journey through dance in London.

When I first landed a dance radio show on BBC Radio London in the early 80s, people then were saying that dance music was a fad and it wasn't going to last. The phrase often used was "the bubble burst". Over twenty years later, dance continues to flourish with a whole new generation of DJs and producers and I'm glad to say I'm still out there in clubland too!

So in 1988, acid house from Chicago was still a predominant force in the more cutting edge clubs and raves. As a DJ I was playing both dance & hip hop and by then I had a daily show on the newly rebranded BBC GLR, playing everything from acid house to hip hop - this was the year Public Enemy featured me on their album 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back'.

Meanwhile, during the day I landed a job running Urban Records and signed of group of producers to make an album called 'Urban Acid' which we launched at the legendary spectrum night at Heaven. My days consisted of running the record company until say 4.30pm, then heading off to do the radio show from 7-9pm, then going to a recording studio to check in on the acts. Then either staying there most of the night or going to a club. It really was eighteen hour days sometimes. There were quite a few casualties along the way, but there was tremendous energy and exciting music arriving from the US. Detroit was just starting to kick off with producers like Juan Atkins & Derrick May and New York was pumping energetic house form Brooklyn DJ Todd Terry. This was before dance magazines had tried to tribalise everything, in a DJ set you may play some hip hop, some acid and some house in the same set, everyone had an open mind and people were trying new things.

On the next CD we see how things progress. Within three years British DJs and producers have stolen the American crown and UK dance music arrives en masse. Until then, here's a taste of 1988... enjoy.
