Album

This is the first of a two-part document on the Thelonious Monk Quartet at the famed Olympia Theatre in Paris. Here is Monk's great band featuring Charlie Rouse on saxophones, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums, working through one of the stranger programs Monk fed audiences in 1965. The set opens with a wiggy version of Evidence, where the opening line has an extended harmonic vamp and opens right into Rouse's solo. In 1965 free jazz was in full swing and the first rumbles of jazz rock were on the horizon, but Thelonious Monk was ignoring all that and sticking with the bop he helped invent. This is a good solid performance by Monk and his gang, no big surprises at this point in his career, but at the same time there was no slacking or just resting on past laurels, Monk was still playing every note like he meant it.
