The predecessor of the Esoteric Warfare album, wasis Mayhems most provoking declaration to date, not only for extreme metal, but for progressive metal in general. The album was as much of an artistic blessing as of a band lineup curse as well, as long time guitarist Rune Eriksen aka Blasphemer decided to quit Mayhem in 2008 on the grounds of creative saturation. His departure put the band on what appeared then as an indefinite hiatus. Together with Attila, they began composing new songs around 2012 songs that see Mayhem go through the motions of intelligent black metal, yet their craft remains unmatched. Aion Suntelia 2014 brings the 30th anniversary of the single most notorious and important band in the history of black metal MAYHEM. With the band's four revolutionary full-lengths, a legacy of boundless extremity, and an ethic rooted firmly in the principle of no compromise. MAYHEM is the archetype that three generations of black metal bands follow as law. As they enter their 30th year, MAYHEM deliver 'E. Season of Mist. Esoteric Warfare, their newest album and first since 2007s scraping-and-clawing Ordo Ad Chao, does not altogether dispatch with the controversy. Yet again, Mayhem has a new lineup: their guitarist of 13 years, Blasphemer, exited soon after the last album, replaced by Teloch, a mechanical but experimental type who played with drummer Hellhammer in the overlooked Norwegian band Nidingr. He's the third key guitarist to play on a Mayhem album they've at least managed to keep Attila as a frontman, making this the first time hes ever appeared on two consecutive Mayhem albums. The album was only the band's fourth full-length, and it saw the return of the serpentine vocals of one Attila Csihar to the ranks. A much more stable human being than previous vocalist Maniac, the album was clearly the work of a far more grounded unit. 2014 heralds the release of this most anticipated of albums in the form of Esoteric Warfare. Like a sarin gas attack, Mayhems fifth studio full-length will pollute the blooms of spring on the 6th of June, courtesy of Seasons of Mist records. It features the apocalyptic lineup of Attila on vocals, Necrobutcher on bass, and Hellhammer on dr.
