Winter Women and Holy Ghost Language School are two albums by Matthew Friedberger of The Fiery Furnaces recorded, unlike The Fiery Furnaces records, without his sister Eleanor Friedberger. Though two separate albums, they were released together as a double album by 859 Recordings in August 2006. It was rereleased in October 2009 on Thrill Jockey Records. Winter Women 62:44. Alternative 2006. Ghost Language School is something of an endurance test. Winter Women is more rewarding by design it only suffers from excessive length and Friedberger's continued insistence on slathering songs with random waves of noise and self-conscious dissonance. i can certainly see how this could be unappealing for most people. but if you loved rehearsing my choir and the vietnamese telephone i can certainly see how this could be unappealing for most people. but if you loved rehearsing my choir and the vietnamese telephone ministry, holy ghost language school is perfect for you. and winter women is only slightly weirder and. This is Matts first solo record and was originally released in 2006 by 859 Recordings. The release has two full albums worth of music Winter Women is a summer record of memorable, accessible, un-ironic, sixties inspired pop songs and Holy Ghost Language School is the musical equivalent of a stormy Murakami novel with the requisite sonic twists and turns which makes Matts work so original. Throughout Winter Women, Friedberger explores the denser sound the Furnaces have gradually approached over their career, sometimes to the point of overcooking- songs like Under the Hood at the Paradise Garage suffer from one keyboard too many being added to the mix. Often the instruments threaten to overwhelm Friedbergers voice entirely, low in volume and prone to muttered spoken-word asides. No such respites are to be found in Holy Ghost Language School, Friedberger's second album-length narrative after the polarizing Rehearsing My Choir. Actually, the story told on this album isn't entirely clear, since it actually contains fewer lyrics than Winter Women, albeit delivered with breathless urgency by Friedberger. But it's clearly a hell of a story, if the jagged, astringent instrumentation is anything to go by. 1 Seventh Loop Highway. 2 Holy Ghost Language School. 3 The Cross and the Switchblade. 4 I Started Using Alcohol at the Age of Eleven.
