It was during this period that the two works which survive from his teenage compositions were written: The movement for Piano Quartet 1876-1878 and Das klagende Lied which was submitted for a competition in 1880 where the jury was led by Brahms, but failed to win a prize. Over the next few years he revised the latter work and wrote a number of songs but he was obtaining more work as a conductor and at successively larger opera houses. This is definitely an essential purchase for anyone new to Mahler. But there's also a lot to enjoy for mature Mahler fans, especially the much hailed Tennstedt live recordings of symphonies 5 & 8 and Rattle's excellent interpretations of symphonies 4 & 10 Cooke version. Very good are Giulini's 1st, Rattle's Klagendes Lied and Klemperer's Lied von der Erde with Christa Ludwig and Fritz Wunderlich

Reviews of the Mahler - The Complete Works (2):

This is definitely an essential purchase for anyone new to Mahler. But there's also a lot to enjoy for "mature" Mahler fans, especially the much hailed Tennstedt live recordings of symphonies 5 & 8 and Rattle's excellent interpretations of symphonies 4 & 10 (Cooke version).
Very good are Giulini's 1st, Rattle's "Klagendes Lied" and Klemperer's "Lied von der Erde" (with Christa Ludwig and Fritz Wunderlich).
Other recordings are well worth having, the only one I dislike is Szell's "Des Knaben Wunderhorn", mostly because of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's rendering; I gues she just ain't my cup of tea.
The bonus CD of course is a wonderful addition and makes the set worth every penny.
