Reviews of the Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love (16):
Anicasalar
Other than a minute long faint tik-tik-tik-tik each revolution during the ending of Hello Earth with the Richard Hickox Singers, my copy was clean and quiet, with a pleasant warm tone. I did my own digital master of the rip and have been very pleased with it. You may wish to consider the newer re-issues now available, but I find little fault in this one, especially compared to an awful sounding original US pressing I used to have.
Brariel
Recently purchased a used copy of this AF version and upon first play definitely had the horrible surface noise, pops, clicks, etc...I was pretty bummed. But I cleaned the record with Record Time enzyme cleaner on a Keith Monks vacuum RCM and the record plays dead silent now, I kid you not. As far as the mastering, it's interesting. Definitely nice, rich textured and detailed. But I do admit the drum sound could have been bigger (especially on Running Up That Hill). The sound is expansive and can be atmospheric if your systems permits. You can really drive the record by turning it up. But the bass definitely needs to be given more presence in the mix and the vocals sound weird on some tracks. Some tracks sound better than others. Mother Stands For Comfort sounds pretty rad with punchy drums, a thick low end and beautiful synths. I don't know why the rest of the tracks on Side A didn't manage to turn out the same quality. Surprisingly, The Ninth Wave sounds extraordinarily better than Hounds of Love. The piano on And Dream of Sheep sounds so full and operatic while Kate's vocals are rich and defined. And Waking The Witch sounds absolutely humongous. My major complaint is that the mastering doesn't reflect the energy of the songs well enough which is not what you would expect from a master engineer such as SH. It could be an issue with the original tapes. Sometimes it's hard to maintain a high quality sound when the tapes you are cutting from are in bad shape themselves. Sounds like there could have been some digital clean up on side A, maybe some plangent process? I don't know, either way, this isn't a bad sounding reissue just not the holy grail some people might have been hoping for this record.
Kamick
It sounds like you are talking about mixing aspects, not mastering aspects. Two totally different things.
Gelgen
Just found my copy of this in the back of a cupboard. I hadn't listened to it since I bought it, brand new, on a trip to the US years ago. So, I agree with the others, very disappointing sound. The drums on Running up that Hill sound like they've got blankets on them. Just did a direct comparison with my two original UK pressings, no comparison, the originals are much crisper and alive.
Ubranzac
My copy is not numbered on the back cover, and the vinyl is definitely this one and not the 2014.
Flash_back
i'm not sure about that Ballym0ss. i also have a non-numbered copy that is definitely the 2010 vinyl and it's grey/pink--not the darker purple version.
MrDog
The grey marble is numbered. The purple vinyl isn't. I have one of each. Hope this helps.
komandante
I expected a high pressing quality but the noise floor is unacceptable. How can this leave a plant ? Washing machine did not have any impact. This is one of the worst quality ever. Buy the original.
Domarivip
Ive found this remaster good, but not mind blowing. Just snitched the EMI 100 DMM pressing so can compare, but this is a nice disc if you want a sturdy package and a warm sounding disc. Personally - I feel this worked on the Sensual World remaster by the same team, this album I would prefer sharper and punchier. Found the disc to have no interfering noise.
Redfury
Sonics were great but I found the pressing to be much noisier than I expected. I have other Audio Fidelity Lp's and they are very quiet. Perhaps there's just no escaping the noise found on swirly vinyl.
Axebourne
Thankfully mine was not too bad at all...a little more than average but i think i got away with a fairly decent copy. Ironically the second side was a little quieter in contrast to the first run...i have the second pressing. I am happy Side 2 is fairly quiet as there are a lot more quieter passages on this side.
Gathris
Agree - definitely a massively noisy piece of vinyl. Disappointing.
Rocksmith
Was skeptical that a coloured 'marble' press will sound silent and sound great. Have to say, BIG surprise this pressing sounds amazing. The mastering by Steve Hoffman, as always, is immaculate. This press was a bit pricey, but is worth it. Hoping Audio Fidelity release the rest of Kate's catalog. I'd buy without hesitation.
Ienekan
Long story short - skip it. It ain't worth $40.I was hoping that the 2010 Audio Fidelity remaster of "Hounds Of Love" would be a definitive listening experience of this amazing record, my favourite of all time (well, besides "The Dreaming"). Alas, it is not. It's difficult to comment on the mastering in detail (which I was underwhelmed by) when the pressing is so incredibly awful. I owned the limited-edition version of this - which was sent back, and then a newer unnumbered pressing - also sent back. The difference? The vinyl is a more appealing color (marbleized purple), the label misprints are the same (not a big deal but…sloppy), the pressing is an abomination. Side B = lots of noise and distortion. This distortion was identical on both records, and others I have heard. Odd mistracking in parts (especially at the end of "Under The Ice"), uncomfortable ticks, a barrage of pops in quieter passages. It ruins the beauty that is "The Ninth Wave".I contacted Audio Fidelity several times about it, they were nice and responded. I asked WHY? They had no idea what I was talking about. I explained and sent links to forums where others went into great detail about their dissatisfaction regarding this. They had never heard of such a thing (even though others had also contacted them, and also returned records to them). Time passed. They reissued several pressings. They did nothing to change what was wrong. Pity really, since the Audio Fidelity remastering of "The Sensual World" is so excellent. That one I can honestly recommend. I would suggest seeking out the Simply Vinyl version of this (on my wish list). Or just go for the original UK issue. I also own the original US grey marble version (fine) and the withdrawn Canadian pink marble swirl (not great, but incredibly beautiful). I prefer any of these over AF.
Maldarbaq
I also bought a recent copy (March 2014) of this record, and it is a very quiet pressing on both sides. No pops or surface noise, and just a few faint ticks throughout the whole record that are almost imperceptible.
Very Old Chap
A real shame you got a dud copy. I believe they have reissued this one. The recent copy I got sounds nothing but impressive.
