GU026CD Series: Global Underground Series 026 Format: 2 CD, Compilation, Mixed Country: UK Released: 01 Mar 2004 Underground 026: James Lavelle, Romania is a DJ mix album in the Global Underground series, compiled and mixed by James Lavelle of UNKLE. The album peaked at 14 on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums. Another much anticipated return to GU duties as Lavelle defies preconceived ideas and turns in a predictably unpredictable, gloriously eclectic beats-driven mix. There is welcome, liberal use of his own UNKLE tracks and a starring role for Meat Katie too. James Lavelle. Global Underground: Romania 026. One of the unfortunate side effects of James Lavelle's conversion from genre-crafting label head to superstar DJ is the fact that his once lauded UNKLE musical project has been sidelined, with its Never, Never, Land album being completely overlooked by both music press and fans. Ultimately I wanted this album to reflect a really great listening experienceIt will be a progression of the last album and will contain the records I like playing out but it will also contain tracks that people will hopefully find a bit different. The mix will be a bit more f ed-up than before and alot more eclectic. JAMES LAVELLE - Global Underground 026: Romania - 2 CD - Import Condition: Good. Time left: 24d 9h 29m 50s Ships to: Worldwide. Two mixes by James Lavelle and two UNKLE mixes for . Electronic Rock Alternative Rock. The last James Lavelle contribution to the Global Underground series was the least of my favourites. I've always had this lovehate relationship with GU releases. I buy them. CD 1 to GU 26 Romania is entitled 'Beauty and'' and opens with its self-titled intro. Once past the intro, the mix begins with the UNKLE Reconstruction of Queens of the Stone Age's 'No One Knows' which is then mixed into the original version of UNKLE's 'In A State'. Or more pointedly, it's not mixed at all because one track ends just as the other begins

Reviews of the James Lavelle - Romania #026 (4):
Why do people have such a problem with DJs/Producers playing their own music? It isn't shameless at all. If he doesn't play it, who else will? and what I mean by that is that dance music is middle-man culture, as soon as it has been released the rest of the world owns it. Nobody knows what tunes are going to be hits, underground anthems or just pale into insignificance and be forgotten. Lavelle plays his own music because it is an integral part of his sets and himself. Unkle music is like electronic rock music and there aren't many djs who you can say that about. It is a bit 'all over the place' but that makes it more interesting in my opinion. Lavelle you are one of my heroes, I love this mix and I salute you :)
While I agree with the above review by pseudorob in that the "self-promotional" tracklisting did initially deter me from buying this, I was bought this as a gift this year (2007) and I let it play in the background while doing some work...

I had let all those preconceptions disappear and was not looking at the tracklist as the sounds washed over me, and I really enjoyed the trip. Both discs offer something that is totally unique to Mr Lavelle: a kind of crossover sound of Indie/Dance that fuses a lot of elements of these genres into his own unique formula. And here he does so with a lot more personality than with GU 23 (Barcelona), which could be rather "grey" at times, if you like.

It's a solid breaks-based mix basically, 4/5 from me - and while one could look at this mix as a "vehicle of self-promotion" (rather cynically as I did before listening), I now consider it to be a masterpiece: of him pulling out a selection of diverse records and programming them, knitting them together by his own productions to make something totally unique.
This is a disgrace.

I've seen James Lavelle several times live and he always delivers an interesting, eclectic and boundary-crossing mix, well reflected by his Fabric Live 01 effort. From that promising start there has been a steady decline which has been bitterly disappointing.

For mine, his subsequent mix (GU:Barcelona) was a moderate disappointment - solid track selection but nothing interesting or inspiring about it. Then we get GU:Romania - less a mix than a shameless vehicle to promote his own label, material and remixes.

Disturbingly, this is becoming all too common in mixes these days. The term 'sell-out' comes to mind...
This was a GREAT Global Underground CD, however, I am a little dissapointed with the amount of James Lavelle productions on it. I'm sure he had more then just these in his record box.

The transition out of the first track was pretty weird, but other then that, a solid comp. Not the best Global Underground by far, but not the worst either.

Definately some good stuff on here. I don't think it really reflects James' sets that well.
