Hank Ballard born John Henry Kendricks November 18, 1927 March 2, 2003 was a rhythm and blues singer and songwriter, the lead vocalist of The Midnighters and one of the first rock and roll artists to emerge in the early 1950s. He played an integral part in the development of the genre, releasing the hit singles Work With Me, Annie and answer songs Annie Had a Baby and Annie's Aunt Fannie with his Midnighters. In 1951, Ballard moved back to Detroit and formed a doo wop group. He soon joined a group called The Royals, along with Henry Booth, Charles Sutton, Sonny Woods and Alonzo Tucker. The Royals had already signed to Federal Records when Ballard joined, and the group soon released Get It read more. Ballard, whose main inspiration seems to have been Clyde McPhatter, was born John Henry Kendricks on November 18, 1927. Ballard had a penchant for pleasantly smutty music with a danceable beat. Alonzo Tucker was assigned the lead vocal on Get It, this group's first Billboard R&B hit. From here on out even the slower numbers always had a little extra kick to them, and a twangy guitar began to predominate in between juicy blasts from the saxophone.
