Album

Lost and Gone Forever is the third studio album by the band Guster, released in September 1999. It was recorded earlier that year in Sausalito, California, and Bearsville, New York. In 1999, Ryan Miller claimed that Guster took the album's title from the popular folk song 'Oh My Darling, Clementine' and chose it because we felt it reflected the lyrical content of the record. In February 2012, Paste magazine named Lost and Gone Forever the 79th greatest album of the 1990s. Signing to a major-label doesn't really change Guster's outlook for their third album, Lost & Gone Forever. However, the switch to the big leagues has given the band the opportunity to hire a heavy-hitter producer, Steve Lillywhite, who performs a similar function here that he did with Dave Matthews. Lillywhite doesn't attempt to change Guster's jovial folk-pop, but he helps them focus and gives them a clear, vibrant sonic palette that makes Lost & Gone Forever sound inviting and intimate. Lost and Gone Forever is a surprisingly dark record, something not readily apparent when you listen to Millers eternally optimistic vocals and the songs supernaturally bright melodies. But its there in the lyrics, from the sarcastic daggers Miller throws on Two Points For Honesty to the damning chorus of Happier that Gardners bass voice adds so much gravity to. Gusters mixture of pop joy and lyrical disenchantment is a paradoxical one, and the direct reason for Lost and Gone Forevers timelessness.
