Walter Brown Brownie McGhee November 30, 1915 February 16, 1996 was an American folk music and Piedmont blues singer and guitarist, best known for his collaboration with the harmonica player Sonny Terry. McGhee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee. At about the age of four he contracted polio, which incapacitated his right leg. His brother Granville Sticksor Stick McGhee, who also later became a musician and composed the famous song Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-o. Walter Brownie McGhee November 30, 1915 - February 16, 1996 was a folk-blues singer and guitarist, best known for his collaborations with the harmonica player Sonny Terry October 24, 1911 - March 11, 1986. Brownie McGhee was born in Kingsport, Tennessee and suffered from polio as a child, which incapacitated his leg. He spent much of his youth immersed in music, singing with local harmony group the Golden Voices Gospel Quartet and teaching himself the guitar. Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry recorded a handful of albums for the Folkways label in the 1950's, out of which was collected an excellent CD compilation called The Folkways Years. This complete album was made in November 1957 and is typical of what they were doing at this time. By typical I don't mean average, but very good. The material tends toward folk blues - older styles, traditional verses, etc
